Laying the groundwork for Donkey Hotels' ESRS disclosures.
In the lead-up to the Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD) and its initially wider applicability prior to the Omnibus revisions, Donkey Hotels who is a key player in the Greek hospitality market, understood the strategic imperative to prepare for its future ESRS disclosures. To embark on a compliant path, Donkey Hotels partnered with Kōan to undertake a comprehensive double materiality assessment (DMA).
The Challenge
For a company of Donkey Hotels' scale, the intricacies of a compliant DMA presented a notable challenge, often feeling disproportionate to their operational footprint. The need to navigate extensive stakeholder engagement to understand varied perspectives, alongside the meticulous analysis of a broad spectrum of potential environmental, social, and governance (ESG) topics, placed a considerable strain on resources and expertise. Adding to this complexity was the novel nature of the ESRS framework, which introduced detailed data collection and analysis requirements that demanded careful navigation for a truly compliant and insightful assessment.
Our Approach
We began by scoping the assessment across all of Donkey Hotels' operations, using the ESRS framework as our starting point to identify relevant impacts and dependencies. This was followed by engaging key internal stakeholders in collaborative workshops to score and prioritise these topics based on both their impact and financial materiality. The final material impacts, risks and opportunities were then consolidated and visually represented on a materiality matrix.
The purpose of this process was to pinpoint the sustainability matters most critical to Donkey Hotels and its stakeholders, ultimately defining the content and scope of their future ESRS disclosures. This tailored approach ensured that Donkey Hotels' reporting would be focused, relevant, and compliant, addressing the most pertinent issues for their business and stakeholders.
Key elements:
- Top-down identification: Starting with the AR 16 list of ESRS sustainability matters to ensure comprehensive coverage
- Distinct identification of dependencies and impacts: Separately identifying how Donkey Hotels relies on resources and the impacts Donkey Hotels has on people and the environment
- Robust scoring methodology: Using a quantitative approach with defined parameters and normalisation for objective comparison
- Collaborative internal workshops: Engaging key internal stakeholders for direct input and validation through real-time polling
- Clear linkage to ESRS disclosures: Directly connecting material topics to relevant reporting requirements for the Sustainability Statement
The Result
The comprehensive DMA conducted by Kōan, successfully identified the material impacts, risks, opportunities and dependencies specific to Donkey Hotels' operating context within the Greek hospitality market, informed by consultation with relevant stakeholders.
This compliant and auditable process has equipped Donkey Hotels with a clear understanding of the material topics required to confidently move forward with their disclosures under the ESRS.
